A General Approach for Parallelizing the Fem Software Package Diana

A general approach for parallelizing the FEM software package DIANA 1 is proposed. It consists of a number of phases starting from dividing the element domain using an automatic domain decomposer, followed by an ordering phase for minimum ll-ins on the one hand and for parallelism on the other hand. Next the mapping and scheduling phase schedules the tasks onto the processors for parallel execution. We use dependence graph to describe the data dependences of the tasks in a (parallel) solution of a sparse system and a macro data ow execution scheme for both shared-and distributed-memory systems. The proposed approach has been implemented in the DIANA package. The rst experimental and simulation results with the parallel DIANA package show that the proposed approach is eecient for parallelizing FE computations.
